DUV (GERMAN ULTRAMARATHON ASSOCIATION) ENTRY - 05/2020

210103_DUV Entrance.jpg

Why did I join the DUV?

I have fun and joy in long runs, at a comfortable pace, in a rhythm that enables me to explore my body, mind and will. I find greater joy in long runs. Last year I took part in the Taubertal 100 (100 km distance) after running several marathons and 50s. Florian Reus supported me. I am very proud and passionate about running longer distances. I joined the DUV because I have great respect for all runners who have pushed their limits. I would like to take part in the special experience of having experienced and created something, to step out of the comfort zone in order to walk the path that everyone individually and personally sees as their destiny.

Do I run runs as a competition, as an experience or for pleasure?

In general, the goal is important to me. The bottom line is for me the journey is the goal and the competition is, on the one hand, a confirmation of having come so far through the training and, on the other hand, a great experience. In the end, I only feel a deep satisfaction after the run, during the run I switch everything off. So I don't see a competition, but rather an examination of myself. I run a competition, a long run, to have a spiritual experience.

My music playlist for a quick work-out?

  • Iron Maiden - Alexander the great

  • Gus Gus - David

  • Steven Wilson - Luminol

Which podcast / audio book will accompany me on a long session?

None, I switch off and listen to myself, try to get body, mind and soul in harmony.

Should music be allowed in competition?

Yes, on long runs. A fast 10 with little space to evade can cause turbulence.

Running shoes by functionality, design or price?

Functionality. I haven't bought any pink shoes yet.

How do I react if someone in front of me intentionally shortens the route?

Let it go, because this runner will never reach his goal.

What is most likely to wear me down in a competition: constant rain, a wrongly signposted path, or stubborn chasers behind you?

None of the above, probably most of all when I get the feeling that I am not in the now, but that I am thinking of the great long road that lies ahead of me and that I do not feel any progress.

How tolerant is my family and environment when it comes to my sport?

My wife and three boys (10 and 8 each) are my big anchor. I'm lucky, my wife thinks that if this is my mid life crisis and not blonde, then it's okay.

How susceptible to doping do I think ultra-running is?

How susceptible to doping do I think ultra-running is?

Not at all, is it an Olympic discipline? My no. It is not a popular sport, but a personal achievement that is still under the public's radar. At least that's my impression, without knowing any real details. An ultra runner is perceived as an exception. Without any commercial ulterior motives. Actually a nice condition.

Which competition should you have done once in your life?

The competition that motivates and fills you personally, aligns you and brings you forward. I think it's the competition that pushes your limits. And these are individual. Without a goal, without passion, discipline and dedication, it becomes difficult to name a specific competition.
